How does the mind "know"
that one object is occluded by
the other rather than that both
objects are in the same plane?
The obvious answer is that we
are familiar with the shapes of
things and thus we can tell
when they are incomplete.
There is undoubtedly some
truth in this answer. But even
when viewing unfamiliar
shapes, we tend to see one
shape in front of another. How
can we know that such objects
are incomplete? The answer to
this question is in dispute,
although, as we shall see in
Chapter 5, some light can be
shed on it by an understanding
of how we perceive form.
